What To Do in Venice in September

With the heat of summer fading, September is a beautiful month to explore Venice at leisure. The canals shimmer in the softer light of early autumn, and the city's rowing tradition takes center stage with one of the year's most important regattas. Cultural events and island celebrations add even more to enjoy this month. Here are some more of our favorite events happening this September in Venice.

The Regata Storica

7 September 2025

Held each year on the first Sunday of September, the Regata Storica is the highlight of the Venetian rowing calendar. The festivities begin with a grand water parade led by the city's most beautiful ceremonial vessel, the Serenissima. Adorned in gold leaf, the Venetian fleet carries city officials, costumed gondoliers, rowers, musicians and reenactors along the Grand Canal toward St. Mark's Basin. The races then begin, starting near the Sant'Elena gardens, looping around the paleto turning point by Santa Lucia train station and finishing at Ca' Foscari. The sight of brightly painted boats slicing through the water, cheered on by crowds along the canal, makes this an unforgettable Venetian tradition.

Burano Regatta

21 September 2025

On the northern edge of the Venetian Lagoon, the island of Burano hosts its annual regatta, a celebration of the skills and traditions that once connected the islanders to Venice. The festivities begin in Baldassarre Galuppi Square, where the air is filled with the aroma of local dishes like risotto and freshly caught fish. The regattas start around 2 pm and continue into the evening, accompanied by music, entertainment and the colorful charm of Burano's canalside streets.
