Saint Martin's Day is a traditional feast long celebrated in Venice, especially popular with children. Honoring an early Christian saint remembered for his charity, the day was once marked by giving to the poor and celebrating the end of the harvest. Today the custom has taken on a playful twist. Children roam their neighborhoods banging pots and pans, hoping for coins or sweets from neighbors and shopkeepers. Bakeries throughout the city prepare special San Martino cookies, shortcrust pastries shaped like the saint on horseback and decorated with colorful icing and candies.

In 1630, as a devastating plague swept Venice, the Senate vowed to build a church in honor of the Virgin Mary if the city was spared. The plague subsided soon after, and work began on the magnificent Basilica di Santa Maria della Salute, completed in 1687. Since then, Venetians have honored their promise with an annual pilgrimage to the church on November 21. A floating bridge of barges is assembled across the Grand Canal, and thousands cross to light candles before the Madonna, filling the basilica with a moving glow of devotion.
