First celebrated in 1576 after the city emerged from a devastating plague, the Festa del Redentore is one of Venice's most cherished traditions. The celebration centers on a temporary bridge of boats linking the Giudecca with the Church of the Redentore, where a solemn mass is held. As evening falls, boats decorated with flowers and lanterns fill St. Mark's Basin, and families gather onshore and on the water to share food, music and laughter. At midnight, a spectacular fireworks display lights up the lagoon, its colors reflecting in the water, before festivities continue late into the night.
