As Carnevale approaches, Venice begins to fill with the color of costumes and the sound of music drifting through the squares. Each day brings more performances and celebrations, building toward one of the city's most cherished traditions. Here are some of our highlights for February in Venice.

31 January - 17 February 2026
Carnevale has been part of Venice's story for centuries, with roots stretching back to at least the 13th century. It reached its height of popularity in the 17th and 18th centuries, when elaborate masked balls, music and theatrical performances filled the city. Banned in 1797 after the fall of the Venetian Republic, the tradition faded until its official revival in 1979, when Venice once again embraced the pageantry that had captivated visitors for generations.
Today, Carnevale transforms the city into a grand stage. Costumed figures stroll through the calli and squares, street performances pop up in historic piazzas and the Grand Canal comes alive with colorful boat parades. While much of the entertainment is free to enjoy, exclusive masked ticketed balls and private parties offer the chance to experience the opulent side of this centuries-old celebration.

7 February 2026
The Festa della Marie recalls an ancient legend in which twelve young brides-to-be were kidnapped during their wedding feast and later rescued by the Doge and his men. More than a thousand years later, the event is still celebrated each year. Twelve young women, chosen from across Venice, are honored as the "Marys" and dressed in elaborate gowns. Escorted by a grand procession of costumed participants, they travel by gondola from Santa Sofia along the Grand Canal, cheered on by crowds lining the route.
